Belém, like the rest of the state of Para, has a rich and long history of good eating and dining. Unlike Manaus, here you will find a lively foodie scene, with new restaurants and bars appearing regularly, and which use old ingredients in unusual ways. Paraenses take their food seriously. One excellent example is the Bosque do Remanso restaurant which uses the açaí plant, usually eaten as a dessert in the form of a sweet pulp, to make a savory-sweet farofa eaten with main courses, something you won’t find anywhere else.
From gnocchi to ravioli, flawless preparation of the basics distinguishes this Italian eatery from others. Everyone in town knows this, so reservations are a good idea—particularly on weekends. Be sure to try one of their 600 varieties of wine on offer. Don't leave without ordering a scrumptious dolce Paula (ice cream–and–brownie dessert).
