Why We Like It

If walls could talk, the ones inside Hotel d’Angleterre would speak in hushed, aristocratic tones and probably be fluent in several languages. This is the kind of place where you half expect to see Hans Christian Andersen scribbling away in a corner or Winston Churchill sharing a drink in the bar. But this is not a museum piece. After an extensive renovation, the hotel flawlessly balances its historic grandeur with modern-day refinement. The palatial façade and 18th-century bones remain, but inside, everything gleams, updated for a clientele who demands both heritage and high-tech perfection.

Fodor's Expert Review

If you want understated Scandinavian minimalism, look elsewhere. But if you’re seeking the pinnacle of refined European extravagance, Copenhagen’s Hotel d’Angleterre beckons. This Grand Dame has stood watch over Kongens Nytorv since 1755, hosting royalty, world leaders, and the kind of guests who expect chandeliers, Champagne, and impeccable service as a baseline. Its walls have witnessed historic moments, from royal celebrations to diplomatic negotiations. But this isn’t some relic preserved in glass–far from it. Renovations and innovations keep it a living, breathing icon, blending centuries-old prestige with modern indulgence.

  • Central location

Room

A stay at the d’Angleterre feels more like a coronation than a hotel stay. From the moment you step inside your room, the world slows down. The colors are soft—champagne golds, icy blues, deep plums—the textures indulgent—velvet headboards, silk curtains, impossibly plush carpets. The space is exceptionally generous, especially in the city center of Copenhagen. Each room is a masterclass in refined grandeur—think antique-inspired furnishings, marble fireplaces, handcrafted moldings, and high ceilings that make a standard room feel like a suite.

And speaking of suites—this is where Hotel d’Angleterre truly shines. The One-Bedroom Suites feel like private apartments in the kind of building you’d dream of living in—some with balconies overlooking Kongens Nytorv, others with grand living rooms made for champagne-fueled evenings. The Royal Suite, an 18th-century fantasy in white and gold, spans nearly 2,500 square feet and is quite literally fit for a king.

But opulence here isn’t just about aesthetics or the most grand room at the hotel. From the most minor details to the smallest room, d’Angleterre delivers. Every bed is custom-made and impossibly soft, the pillow menu is extensive, and the minibar is curated with Scandinavian craft selections and blackout curtains. The technology is seamlessly incorporated into the old-fashioned decor: a touch of a button dims the lights, adjusts the temperature, and cues the perfect playlist. The televisions are discreetly framed in antique-style molding because nothing should disrupt the aesthetic.

Tip If you want the best and have the bank account to afford it, book a suite with a balcony overlooking the square—the closest you’ll get to feeling like Danish royalty.

Bathroom

As expected, the bathrooms at Hotel d’Angleterre are as refined as the rest of the hotel—spacious, elegantly designed, and equipped with every comfort you didn’t realize you needed. Italian marble lines the floors and walls, framing deep soaking tubs and separate rain showers that feel more like a spa than a standard hotel. Heated floors keep things hot (literally) in colder months, while plush robes and slippers make lingering post-bath almost inevitable. High-end toiletries by Diptyque complete the lavish experience and leave you smelling stellar.

Tip Leave a little extra space in your suitcase—taking home some of the luxurious toiletries from your room will add a royal touch to your home

Lobby

Hotel d’Angleterre’s lobby makes a statement without needing to say much. Grand but never gaudy, its marble floors, gold-leaf ceiling, and mix of antique and contemporary artwork set the tone for the hotel’s quiet confidence. A small but unexpected detail is the LEGO model of Hotel d’Angleterre, gifted by The LEGO Group, sitting stoically behind the reception desk.

While the main lobby feels impressively formal, the upper lobby shifts into something softer and more inviting. Muted tones, well-spaced seating, and sculptural light fixtures make it feel more like a designer’s take on a European salon than a traditional hotel lounge. In the colder months, a working fireplace adds to the warmth (of the literal and atmospheric variety!) while locals and guests settle into its deep sofas for coffee or quiet conversation. The hotel takes a dramatic turn during the holiday season, trading restraint for spectacle. Massive Christmas trees, garlands, and extravagant festive displays transform the space into something closer to a winter theater set.

Tip High tea in Hotel d’Angleterre’s Upper Lobby is a must, with expertly crafted pastries and delicate finger sandwiches served alongside a well-curated tea selection in the most hygge of settings.

Pool

Hotel d’Angleterre’s indoor pool is a rarity in Copenhagen—heated, candlelit, and surrounded by sleek stone tiles that make it feel like a private Roman bath. Tucked away in the hotel’s lower floors, it exists in its serene bubble, untouched by the outside world. With no windows, no distractions, and only the soft flicker of candlelight reflecting off the water, time seems to stand still, and life in the city is paused. It’s a cathartic experience–step in, drift weightless, and forget the world outside entirely.

Tip The pool area has only two loungers, so seating is limited, especially during peak hours. If you plan to unwind by the water, aim for an early swim to secure a spot.

Spa

Hotel d’Angleterre is one of the only luxury hotels in Copenhagen with a full-service spa, an indoor pool, and a state-of-the-art fitness center. Amazing Space Spa has a dark and moody aesthetic–an escape within an escape–offering a full menu of indulgences. The pampering doesn’t stop–from Nordic-inspired facials to bespoke massages such as the Revive Sunrise Massage, which is based on long, deep movements with warm organic aromatherapy oil to soothe stress (sign us up, please!) The therapists are world-class, the atmosphere is serene, and every detail feels tailored to relaxation. And even if you don’t indulge in a treatment, the poolside sauna and steam room do a number on sore muscles.

Tip Amazing Space is open to non-guests even if you’re not staying at the hotel—but book early as locals know how good it is.

Gym

The fitness center is small but well-equipped. It features top-of-the-line Technogym equipment, including treadmills, exercise bikes, and kinesis stations. Free weights and a TV enhance the space, while fresh fruit, chilled water, and face towels are always available for a post-workout refreshment. Personal training can also be arranged upon request.

Dining

Marchal, d’Angleterre’s Michelin-starred restaurant, is where every detail is deliberate—from the razor-thin slices of caviar-topped blinis to the flicker of candlelight bouncing off polished wine glasses. The menu balances Nordic simplicity and French indulgence, where dishes like turbot with beurre blanc or rich truffle-laced sauces feel both decadent and refined. Seasonal ingredients dictate much of what’s served, so while summer might bring bright seafood dishes and delicate greens, winter leans into hearty game meats and deep, comforting flavors.

Despite its fine-dining status, Marchal isn’t reserved for grand occasions. It’s open all day, meaning breakfast is just as much a ritual here as dinner. The flawless, buttery eggs Benedict—served with house-made brioche—are a favorite, as are the impossibly flaky Danish pastries that arrive in a warm basket. In the morning, guests feel relaxed, enjoying strong coffee and fresh juices and soaking in the view of Kongens Nytorv through the tall windows.

For something more casual, the lounge in the upper lobby serves lighter fare in a cozy setting that feels more like a high-fashion living room than a hotel restaurant. Here, you’ll find open-faced sandwiches, elegant pastries, and the hotel’s afternoon tea service, a low-key indulgence best enjoyed by the working fireplace in winter or near the sunlit windows in summer.

Drinking

Balthazar Champagne Bar is one of those rare hotel bars that isn’t just for hotel guests. Locals flock here just as much as visitors, drawn in by the deep velvet seating, warm lighting, and the sheer scale of the champagne selection—over 160 bottles, ranging from crisp blanc de Blancs to rare vintage Dom Pérignon. Not in the mood for bubbles? The cocktail list covers you, from perfectly executed classics to seasonal creations that lean heavily on Danish flavors.

Weekends bring a little more buzz, with DJs spinning a laid-back, sultry soundtrack that turns the space into more of a scene without ever feeling forced. It’s one of those places where you can start the evening with a glass of vintage champagne and end up staying for a second round, caught up in the atmosphere. While Friday and Saturday nights get lively, the bar never tips into full-on club territory—this is d’Angleterre, after all, where even a party still feels polished.
