Albergo Il Monastero

$$ | Castello Aragonese 3, Ischia Ponte, 80077, Italy Fodor's Choice

The Castello Aragonese, on its own island, is the unrivaled location for this unique hotel with a peaceful ambience and simple but comfortable rooms overlooking the Mediterranean. The superb restaurant on the spectacular terrace (also open to nonguests) provides sophisticated adaptations of local island cuisine, using much produce from the castle's vegetable garden. The hotel is hugely popular, so book way in advance.

  • Artsy L'Altana Suite with private terraces

Hotel Aragona Palace

$$ | Via Porto 12, Ischia Porto, 80077, Italy

Dominating the entrance to the Riva Destra, Ischia's restaurant strip overlooking the port, this is the closest decent hotel to the arriving hydrofoils. The 1970s facade may put you off, and the rooms are nothing special, but the roof garden with its heated swimming pool is where most guests spend their time.

Pros

  • A hop, skip, and jump from the port
  • Ferry-watching from the roof garden
  • Friendly staff

Cons

  • Rooms have only showers with no baths
  • Rather far from the nearest beach

Hotel La Villarosa Terme

$$ | Via Giacinto Gigante 5, Ischia, 80077, Italy

In a villa and garden a short walk from the beach, this hotel has bright, airy guest rooms decorated with antiques. Meals are served in the roof garden, overlooking the town of Ischia and the Bay of Naples—and you must reserve well in advance. Part of a family-run chain of four hotels in the town of Ischia, it's in the heart of Ischia Porto, just off the busy shopping street Via Roma.

Pros

Il Gatto Bianco

$$ | Via Vittorio Emanuele 32, Capri, 80073, Italy

The spot where Jacqueline Kennedy famously sought refuge from the paparazzi is still a wonderful place to experience a quintessentially Caprese atmosphere, particularly in the public spaces, featuring a blue-on-white bar/breakfast area, 1950s majolica-lined stairs, and antique-y accents. With greater crowds packing Capri, the hotel does suffer a bit from its location—just around the corner from the Piazzetta and right in the thick of crowds, cafés, and discos. That noted, it has grown a little ritzier over the years, and facilities now include a spa open to nonresidents.

Pros

  • Central location
  • Price semi-decent for Capri
  • Historical yet faded jet-set resort

Cons

  • Perhaps too close to the action
  • No sea view
  • Dated decor, tech, and tiny showers in many rooms

Pros

  • Indoor and outdoor swimming pools
  • Friendly staff
  • Great sunsets

The closest hotel to Vivara, this inviting hotel in a former warehouse maintains the characteristics of its marine history while flaunting modern decor. The hotel has a small but immaculate garden, and the marina, beach, and Vivara island are just steps away.

Semiramis Hotel de Charme

$$ | Via G. Mazzella 236, Forio, 80075, Italy

At this quiet family-run hotel—a short walk from Citara Beach and the crowded Giardini Poseidon spa—each of the tastefully decorated rooms has its own theme; the best and most expensive rooms take advantage of the hotel's panoramic views from the upper-terrace wing. Breakfast is served on a terrace with a view of the sea, and, in the hanging gardens there are four swimming pools, including an infinity pool and one filled by geothermal aquifers 30 feet deep.

Villa Antonio

$$ | Via S. Giuseppe della Croce, Ischia Ponte, 80077, Italy

With a superlative panoramic view over the Bay of Cartaromana, Villa Antonio offers a quiet haven close to the action, and direct access to the sea is a few private steps away from the casual whitewashed villa. Sun beds, though, abound at several garden levels, so most guests tend not to stray too far. Guest rooms are basic, but all have air-conditioning and sea views. The owner's brother is a sculptor—his granite and marble works are scattered around the flower-decked terraces, and his studio is in the square by the hotel.

Pros

  • <PRO>attractive price</PRO>
  • <PRO>lovely seaside location</PRO>
  • <PRO>beguiling artsy touches</PRO>

Cons

  • <CON>many steps to negotiate before elevator</CON>
  • <CON>small windows don't do justice to the view</CON>

Villa Eva

$$ | Via La Fabbrica 8, Anacapri, 80073, Italy

Popular with young Wandervögel (young German travelers) who have a laid-back approach to traveling, this unique option is noted for its artisanal style and picturesque architecture: most guest rooms are in tiny garden villas and often feature rotunda ceilings, toy fireplaces, and Caprese arts and crafts. One shortcoming is the location, at the far back end of Anacapri. Although you are only a few minutes' walk from the Villa Damecuta ruins, you're very far away from the island's action.

Pros

  • Rooms in small villas immersed in gardens
  • Young energetic clientele
  • A paradise-island vibe

Cons

  • Patchy cell phone reception
  • Removed from the island's action
  • Gardens can be a haven for mosquitoes

Villa Sarah

$$ | Via Tiberio 3/a, Capri, 80073, Italy

This yellow, two-story, Mediterranean-style hostelry built in 1974—complete with Capri's signature round windows and a setting amid lovely gardens in a tranquil residential district—has lots of Caprese family spirit and simple but homey, brightly accented rooms that will make you feel like a guest in a private villa. The restful nights do come at a price: it's a 15-minute walk down to the action of the piazzetta.

Pros

  • One of the few remaining family-run not profit-obsessed places
  • Lush garden full of fruits and lovely pool
  • Unfussy decor with original '70s features

Cons

  • A long and steep climb from the Piazzetta
  • Many rooms tiny and some may find too dated
  • Not for the fashionistas
