5 Best Hotels in Naples, Italy

Background Illustration for Hotels

Naples is not known for peace and quiet, but many hotels here deliver exactly that, from high-end hideaways to simple, family-run bed-and-breakfasts and pensioni. Usually small and intimate, and often set in historic palazzi, their staffs raise traditional Neapolitan hospitality to an art form. But whether you're in a five-star hotel or a more modest establishment, you may enjoy one of the greatest pleasures of all: a view. Some of the best can be found in the Santa Lucia hotels along the traffic-free waterside of Lungomare. Be sure to ask for a bayside room if your hotel can provide one, though be warned that camere panoramiche (panoramic rooms) often cost more than regular rooms.

Don't be alarmed if your bill is a little larger than anticipated; the city imposes a tassa di soggiorno (tourist tax) of €3 per person per night. Another amenity that might cost you more is air-conditioning—Naples hotels offer some of the strongest air-conditioning around—so when making reservations, be sure to inquire if there's an additional charge. The peak visiting times are April–June and September–October; book well in advance if visiting then.

Chiaja Hotel de Charme

$ | Via Chiaia 216, Naples, 80121, Italy

This 18th-century palazzo has a great location, and its apartments, all on the first floor, have plenty of atmosphere. It was originally owned by the Marchese Nicola Le Caldano Sasso III, whose portrait hangs above the lobby's fireplace, and is still run by his descendants. Antiques from when the palace was new add a personal touch to the elegant guest rooms, some of which have whirlpool baths. One section was once a brothel; rooms there are named for the ladies who then occupied them.

Pros

  • Good location near Piazza del Plebiscito and the Palazzo Reale
  • On a bustling pedestrian-only street
  • Some antiques in guest rooms

Cons

  • No views in a town with some great ones
  • Even with air-conditioning some rooms get hot in summer
  • Entrance up a flight of stairs

Grand Hotel Capodimonte

$ | Via Capodimonte 3, Naples, 80136, Italy

Time seems to have stopped at this charming hotel housed in a 19th-century convent belonging to the Stimmatine Sisters. It is located at the base of the Capodimonte hill and adjacent to the Catacombe di San Gennaro and the Madre del Buon Consiglio church, but a fair walk from the central city sights. The large, tastefully furnished Bourbon-style guest rooms open onto an internal courtyard, dominated by an ornamental skylight. Ask for a quiet room on this side of the hotel.

Pros

  • Sleep in an ex-convent
  • Convenient to the motorway
  • Good price

Cons

  • Entrance on very busy road
  • Many rooms are noisy
  • Long walk from the central sights

Hotel Ausonia

$ | Via Caracciolo 11, Naples, 80122, Italy

In the courtyard of a building on the Mergellina waterfront, this hotel is handy if you're coming or going from the Mergellina pier. On the other hand, perhaps this is why some guests have said they suffer from cabin fever after just a few nights—the constant presence of boats and the portholelike windows might make you think you're on board a ship. The spic-and-span rooms are—no surprise—done in a nautical motif.

Pros

  • One of the few Mergellina-area hotels
  • Away from the city-center hubbub
  • Convenient to the Mergellina port

Cons

  • Inside a larger palazzo, so it's hard to find (be sure to write down the address)
  • Setup can be claustrophobic
  • Away from the city center

La Casa del Monacone

$ | Via Sanità 124, Naples, 80136, Italy

It's not every day you can be a "guest" of a famed 17th-century church, but this distinctive B&B was once part of the giant complex of Santa Maria della Sanità, the main landmark of the Sanità quarter. Before visions of gilded frescoes fill your head, keep in mind that this church was erected by the Franciscans: the hotel's decor would please the spartan taste of their patron saint, though modern majolica flooring and art photographs of local street life inject an upbeat flavor. Guest rooms, however, are minimal modern. La Sanità is a lively, sometimes rough neighborhood, busy with scooters and other traffic, but double-glazed windows cut down on the noise. The owner, Sergio, also offers a comfortable apartment sleeping up to six in the same building, runs an excellent trattoria nearby, La Locanda del Monacone, and  is also responsible for selling tickets to the catacombs of San Gaudioso, situated next door, and those of San Gennaro.

Pros

  • Unique location practically inside the church
  • Beautiful terrace
  • Friendly owner

Cons

  • Small bathrooms
  • Slapdash service at breakfast
  • Busy and noisy neighborhood
