The Rome EDITION
Salita di S. Nicola da Tolentino, 14, Rome, Latium, 00187, Italy
Why We Like It
With its signature restaurant, Anima, and not one but three bars, this is a place to indulge. Luckily, the rooms have extremely comfortable beds and blackout curtains so you can sleep off your hangover. The location, just a couple blocks from Piazza Barberini, makes it easy to explore the city center.
Fodor's Expert Review
Set in a rationalist 1940s building that once housed the offices of the Banca Nazionale del Lavoro, this trendy lifestyle hotel by Ian Schrager and Marriott features a design that leans minimalist, but has some attention-grabbing details, like green velvet curtains in the lobby. Rooms and suites have walnut wood-paneled walls, neutral color schemes, and Le Labo amenities in the stone bathrooms. The restaurant, Anima, serves traditional Italian cuisine with a contemporary approach. There are three bars, including the moody Punch Room, the marble Jade Bar, and a trendy rooftop bar.
PROS
- Excellent dining and drinks
- Rooftop terrace with bar and small pool
- Great location on a quiet street near Piazza Barberini
CONS
- Rooms overlooking the terrace can be noisy

Room
The style of the rooms verges on minimalist but feels warm and welcoming thanks to the walnut wood-paneled walls and furry throw blanket draped across the bed. Flat-screen TVs, Nespresso machines, and minibars stocked with Champagne and chocolate by local chocolatier SAID are nice touches. Some of the 91 rooms and suites have street views, while others look out onto a courtyard.
You Should Know Light sleepers should request a room on the upper floors to avoid being kept awake by music from the ground-floor bars.
Bathroom
Dark gray stone was used for the bathrooms, fitting with the masculine aesthetic of the rooms. Some have deep soaking tubs, while others have rainfall showers. All are stocked with Le Labo bath products.
Lobby
The double-height lobby makes a grand impression, with green velvet curtains that draw the eyes upward and make the ceilings seem even taller. Boxy white sofas and armchairs are arranged around travertine coffee tables, inviting guests to sit and relax with a drink. On one side of the room is the concierge desk, while on the opposite side a pool table stands ready for guests to play.
Tip A small plant-filled lounge just off the lobby offers a more intimate, quieter space for a tête-à-tête.
Pool
There’s a shallow plunge pool on the rooftop that’s more suited to dips and photo opps than swimming laps.
Spa
The subterranean spa will have a couple of treatment rooms offering massages and facials, but they’re not finished yet.
Gym
By Rome’s standards, the gym is quite large and well equipped with ellipticals, stationary bikes, treadmills, weight machines, and free weights by Technogym. It’s open 24 hours.
Dining
Anima, the all-day restaurant’s name, means soul in Italian and that is what it tries to convey to diners. Choose from three different ambiances: the Yves Klein blue room, the Chartreuse room, and the al fresco courtyard, which is the place to be in the warmer months. Executive Chef Antonio Gentile puts some twists on traditional recipes, adding Sicilian red shrimp marinated with lime to the cacio e pepe, for example.
Drinking
Ian Schrager originally made a name for himself in 1970s New York as co-founder of the infamous club Studio 54, so you can imagine that nightlife is an important part of the EDITION brand’s DNA. The Rome EDITION has an outpost of the Punch Room, a speakeasy-style lounge that specializes in large format punches, as well as the intimate Jade Bar, which focuses on agave-based spirits, and a rooftop bar with panoramic views that’s open seasonally.
What's Nearby
Getting Around
The hotel is a five-minute walk from the Barberini metro stop and a 15-minute walk from the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps.
Restaurants
Tullio (a 2-minute walk) is an old school Tuscan restaurant where white-jacketed waiters have been serving steaks since the 1950s. Allegrío (a 7-minute walk) has a full menu with pastas and mains, but in-the-know diners come here for the award-winning pizza. Baccano (a 12-minut walk) looks like a Parisian brasserie but serves one of the best carbonaras in the city.
