Quinta da Foz

$ | Largo do Arraial, Foz do Arelho, 2500–457, Portugal Fodor's Choice

A knight serving King Dom Filipe I built this large manor house in the 16th century, and 20-some generations later it is still owned and operated by the original family. The complex includes stables and a corral for the family's prize Lusitano stallions. The guest rooms—with luxe touches like underfloor heating—are large and comfortably furnished, and a few downstairs have French doors opening to the back terrace; from upstairs there are views of the Óbidos Lagoon. Ask to visit the on-site chapel, with an inscription in old-world Portuguese on the floor dated 1592.

  • Foz do Arelho beach is 15-minute walk away
  • Archery or falconry sessions

Set on some 45 acres of farmland and pine forests overlooking the Tagus River, this property with its several sprawling buildings, a few of which date to the 16th century, is the perfect place to immerse yourself in the Portuguese countryside—perhaps on one of the bikes available to guests. Breakfast includes homemade jams, fresh juice from organic oranges, and eggs any way you like them. Casa das Senhoras Rainhas

$ | Rua Padre Nunes Tavares 6, Óbidos, 2510-070, Portugal

As its name suggests, the charming House of Queens just inside the city walls pays tribute to the royalty associated with Óbidos over the centuries, but its white-and-gold interior decoration is bang up to date. All but two of the guest rooms have balconies; the grand tower room (accessible via a short flight of steps) boasts the best views. The Letraria bar overlooks the garden and has outdoor seating for the warmer months, and serves craft beer and burgers, salads, and snacks.

Originally built by returning Portuguese emigrants to show off their newfound wealth from Brazil, the main house reflects a style that was popular in the South American country at the time. The downstairs honor bar—complete with a pool table—opens out onto a terrace and the centuries-old "new fountain" that gives the place its name.
