Areias do Seixo

$$$$ | Praceta Do Atlântico, Póvoa de Penafirme, 2560–046, Portugal Fodor's Choice

Set among the pine trees near Mexilhoeira Beach, this small and stylish eco-conscious hotel, 20 minutes from Torres Vedras, was built with a desire to harmoniously integrate it with its surroundings: all but one of the open-plan rooms have views of the dunes from a large private terrace (and the odd one out makes up for the lack of a view with a walled garden). Decorated with natural driftwood, all accommodations have underfloor heating for winter, while in summer a fan and the sea breeze are enough to keep you cool. The restaurant serves creations using organic fare from the hotel's own garden, which is also the source of aromatics for the bar. There is also a glamping tent and, on a neighboring plot, a couple dozen equally stylish villas sleeping up to six adults, each with a terrace, barbecue, and private pool.

Pros

  • Spa with sauna, steam room, and treatment rooms
  • Outdoor pools and Jacuzzis are great places to relax
  • Free bicycles for exploring, plus many organized activities

Cons

  • Beach is a 10-minute walk and doesn't have a lifeguard
  • Far from any nightlife
  • Rates are pricey

Praia d'El Rey Marriott Golf & Beach Resort

$$$ | Av. Dona Inês de Castro 1, Óbidos, 2510–451, Portugal Fodor's Choice

This top-notch hotel, part of a sprawling luxury resort, is located 16 km (10 miles) west of Óbidos and includes a large spa and a dazzling array of amenities. Here you have easy access to miles of beach (via a flight of steps from June through August, and by shuttle bus the rest of the year) and special rates at the 18-hole seaside golf course and tennis academy. The luxurious indoor pool is surrounded by white columns reminiscent of a Roman bath. The hotel's Tempera restaurant serves Mediterranean cuisine, while the more distinctive Emprata takes a creative approach to Portuguese dishes; if you tire of these, there are several other options.

Pros

  • World-class golf course plus lots of water sports
  • Plenty to keep kids occupied
  • Several excellent eateries

Cons

  • Food and drink are rather expensive
  • Far from region's attractions
  • Very busy in summer
