This hotel has a bit of a split personality: housed in what was once a 19th-century convent, with impressive stone arches and wooden ceilings, its guest rooms are in "eco-chic" style, employing recycled materials with contemporary flair. In keeping with Óbidos's new-found reputation as a literary town, tens of thousands of books line the walls—including in the spacious Book & Cook restaurant (€22), which serves traditional Portuguese fare with a twist.

As its name suggests, the charming House of Queens just inside the city walls pays tribute to the royalty associated with Óbidos over the centuries, but its white-and-gold interior decoration is bang up to date. All but two of the guest rooms have balconies; the grand tower room (accessible via a short flight of steps) boasts the best views. The Letraria bar overlooks the garden and has outdoor seating for the warmer months, and serves craft beer and burgers, salads, and snacks.
