2 Best Hotels in Baja California Norte, Los Cabos and the Baja Peninsula

Background Illustration for Hotels

Expect your own bathroom, daily maid service, a secure parking lot, and clean quarters in all but the most basic of establishments. Many hotels offer breakfast for an extra fee, and swimming pools are prevalent. Luxury is never far in Baja Norte; almost every touristed locale has at least one "Resort & Spa" that tacks on Jacuzzis, massages, and dollar signs to the above basics (especially along the coast near Ensenada). Be aware that only camping (no hotels) is available in some of Baja Norte's smaller towns, including those on Highway 1 between Ensenada and San Quintín, and those on Highway 3 between Ensenada and San Felipe.

Hacienda Guadalupe

$$$ | Carretera Tecate–Ensenada, Km 81.5, Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico

Privacy, comfort, and quality are the pillars of this hacienda-style property that draws a loyal clientele for the central location and reasonable rates. Housed in a two-story building, rooms overlook the pool and vineyard where grapes are produced for their private Melchum label. Four stand-alone rooms at the back are slightly larger and more modern. When not wine tasting, guests can explore the hiking trails or dine at the popular main restaurant (closed Tuesday) where pork, fish, beef, and weekend brunch are served. With an elegant on-site winery, you can sample from their seven labels and enjoy chocolate and wine pairing. For cocktails and simple fare, visit their newest restaurant-bar Aledaño, open for lunch and dinner (closed Monday).

Pros

  • Great value and spotless property
  • Gorgeous waterfall pool
  • Hospitality at its best

Cons

  • Winery and restaurant closed Tuesday
  • No TVs
  • Low water pressure

Rosarito Beach Hotel & Spa

$$ | Blvd. Benito Juárez 31, Rosarito, 22710, Mexico

Charm and location have the slight edge over comfort at this landmark hotel built in 1924. More traditional rooms in the oldest section have hand-painted wooden beams and heavy dark furnishings. The more modern rooms in the three towers have air-conditioning, king-size beds, stone floors, balconies, and pastel color schemes. The 17-story Pacifico Tower (facing the pier) has the best views, modern rooms, gym access, and a pool bar open on weekends. The larger rooms have kitchenettes, living rooms, and two TVs. The affordable pampering sessions at the spa help compensate for some areas that are in dire need of attention, like the older rooms that come at a marked-up price due to supply and demand on busy weekends.

Pros

  • Close to the beach
  • Antique charm
  • Good Sunday brunch

Cons

  • Older furnishings
  • Overpriced
  • Slow elevator
