7 Best Hotels in Baja California Norte, Los Cabos and the Baja Peninsula

Background Illustration for Hotels

Expect your own bathroom, daily maid service, a secure parking lot, and clean quarters in all but the most basic of establishments. Many hotels offer breakfast for an extra fee, and swimming pools are prevalent. Luxury is never far in Baja Norte; almost every touristed locale has at least one "Resort & Spa" that tacks on Jacuzzis, massages, and dollar signs to the above basics (especially along the coast near Ensenada). Be aware that only camping (no hotels) is available in some of Baja Norte's smaller towns, including those on Highway 1 between Ensenada and San Quintín, and those on Highway 3 between Ensenada and San Felipe.

Torre Lucerna Hotel Ensenada

$$$$ | Carretera Tijuana–Ensenada, Km 108, Ensenada, 22860, Mexico Fodor's Choice

The most upscale hotel in Ensenada has a swanky "Mad Men" vibe, right down to the golden pillars, art deco terrace, and paintings of pin-up girls adorning the lobby and suites. Three restaurants pull out the stops, including Acueducto, which serves a sprawling Sunday brunch. Lucerna is the hotel to see and be seen, especially in the lobby where a tuxedoed pianist tickles the ivories at a blaring level, which is fine since the clientele seems to enjoy it while working their way from the bar to the pool deck. Dapper rooms are spacious and comfy with narrow balconies and soft white bedding. Request an ocean-facing room; although there’s no direct beach access, the views are spectacular. A spa, gym, pool, and business center are just a few of the creature comforts that will have you rethinking your checkout day.

Pros

  • Spa, pool, and rooftop restaurant on-site
  • Reasonable rates
  • Underground secured parking

Cons

  • Street-facing rooms have traffic noise
  • Loud piano in the lobby
  • No direct beach access

Encuentro Guadalupe

$$$$ | Carretera Tecate–Ensenada, Km 75, Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico

With freestanding steel box-cabins perched on a boulder-strewn hill, this property has architect Jorge Gracia to thank for its innovative design. Dirt trails lead to 20 rooms (called “lofts”), each reminiscent of a shipping container from a distance, but inside you’ll find plush white bedding, concrete floors, rain-showerheads, and lamps made from steel pipes. Each sleeps a maximum of two guests, and the hotel is not child-friendly. In an effort to connect with nature, guests are given access to hiking trails and private decks with chimeneas that can be lit upon request. This also translates to no TVs, no phones (walkie-talkies provided), no room service, no minibars, no closets, no wine tasting, and very few room amenities. Despite these cutbacks, this still happens to be the one of the most expensive properties in wine country. Breakfast is served by the infinity pool bar, but your view begins in the glass lobby located at the foot of the mountain (it sometimes functions as restaurant, but is often closed and changes hands frequently). Beyond this point, only guests of the hotel can enter and rooms must be reached by shuttle or on foot.

Pros

  • Pet-friendly
  • Unique design
  • Hiking trails

Cons

  • No kids under 13
  • Must sign liability waivers at check-in
  • Room rates don’t match quality of service

Hacienda Guadalupe

$$$ | Carretera Tecate–Ensenada, Km 81.5, Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico

Privacy, comfort, and quality are the pillars of this hacienda-style property that draws a loyal clientele for the central location and reasonable rates. Housed in a two-story building, rooms overlook the pool and vineyard where grapes are produced for their private Melchum label. Four stand-alone rooms at the back are slightly larger and more modern. When not wine tasting, guests can explore the hiking trails or dine at the popular main restaurant (closed Tuesday) where pork, fish, beef, and weekend brunch are served. With an elegant on-site winery, you can sample from their seven labels and enjoy chocolate and wine pairing. For cocktails and simple fare, visit their newest restaurant-bar Aledaño, open for lunch and dinner (closed Monday).

Pros

  • Great value and spotless property
  • Gorgeous waterfall pool
  • Hospitality at its best

Cons

  • Winery and restaurant closed Tuesday

Hotel Partana

$$$ | Carretera Tecate--Ensenada, Km 83, Valle de Guadalupe, 22750, Mexico

In the heart of Baja's wine country sits this modern 10-room boutique hotel within walking distance of Valle's top restaurants. Five sleek freestanding structures, reminiscent of upcycled containers, each house two suites with private entrances and rooftop terraces where you can sip a glass of wine while soaking in mountain-and-vineyard views. Wedding parties often book out all five units since the massive bathrooms with vanities (a rarity for Valle hotels) are perfect for brides preparing for their big day. Nespresso coffee pods, smart TVs, stocked minibars, and custom-made bath amenities are a few of the perks that set this property apart from the pack. Seamless comfort starts with the towels and bathrobes and ends at the king-size beds, perfectly firm with linens that have a ridiculously high thread count. Since this hotel is part of the Finca Altozano "compound," you can walk to several restaurants including Animalón, ¡Lupe!, and Gelateria Ramonetti while justifying that second (or third) pour with, "Since I'm not driving ..."

Pros

  • Rooms are built in between vines
  • Modern amenities and artisanal toiletries
  • Private accommodations each have a rooftop terrace

Cons

  • Not a full-service hotel
  • Loose gravel pathway to room
  • Patchy Wi-Fi

Lumi

$$ | Camino Vecinal, Ejido El Porvenir, Valle de Guadalupe, 22755, Mexico

It’s love that launched this stunning Nordic-inspired container hotel, starting with a romance between a Finnish woman and a Mexican man who turned their marriage into a passion project that beautifully blended both cultures. The result is Lumi (“snow” in Finnish) that visually captures you even before reaching the six container cabins at the end of a dusty road. The Nordic design is impressive to say the least, with rooftop decks where homemade breakfast is served from 8 to 10 am. Across the horizon is their 9-acre vineyard and orchard where four canvas tents are perched for an affordable glamping experience. Each has "wall-to-wall" carpeting, a king-size bed, and shared bathroom. The container cabins have narrow lounge areas, small but adequate bathrooms, and either one- or two bedrooms. In true Finnish style, a sauna is available to guests. A six-person house is also available for a two-night minimum. This property is a favorite among families and pet owners who capitalize on the owners' love for babies and dogs.

Pros

  • Pets stay free
  • Sauna great on cold nights
  • Bikes for use

Cons

  • No walk-ins
  • Must reserve sauna
  • Remote property

Rosarito Beach Hotel & Spa

$$ | Blvd. Benito Juárez 31, Rosarito, 22710, Mexico

Charm and location have the slight edge over comfort at this landmark hotel built in 1924. More traditional rooms in the oldest section have hand-painted wooden beams and heavy dark furnishings. The more modern rooms in the three towers have air-conditioning, king-size beds, stone floors, balconies, and pastel color schemes. The 17-story Pacifico Tower (facing the pier) has the best views, modern rooms, gym access, and a pool bar open on weekends. The larger rooms have kitchenettes, living rooms, and two TVs. The affordable pampering sessions at the spa help compensate for some areas that are in dire need of attention, like the older rooms that come at a marked-up price due to supply and demand on busy weekends.

Pros

  • Close to the beach
  • Antique charm
  • Good Sunday brunch

Cons

  • Older furnishings
  • Overpriced
  • Slow elevator
