7 Best Restaurants in Embarcadero, San Diego

The large, plush booths and elegant decor at Animae suggest an air of sophistication, while the soundtrack of '90s-era hip-hop adds a flash of casual cool to keep it from ever being too stuffy. Not that such a thing is at risk at this dazzling Embarcadero bistro, which pairs indulgent, tender Wagyu beef steak cuts with a variety of dishes inspired by Filipino and Pan-Asian cuisine from James Beard Award Finalist chef Tara Monsod. In fact, with dishes like the Hunan lamb chops, hamachi, and duck kimchi fried rice, it's just as tempting to forgo a single cut of meat in favor of sampling so many of their other culinary creations.

Don't be put off by the name, or that it is part of a small chain. This fine-dining restaurant has won a devoted following for classic seafood, casual but sophisticated settings, and nightly live jazz. Chilled oysters and other shellfish compete with Maine lobster tacos and tableside steak tartare to start the meal. The polished staff helps with informed descriptions of almost two dozen entrées starring fish flown in fresh daily and prime steaks. Sea bass in a savory soy broth and Parmesan-crusted sole are favorites, and the wedge salad stands up to any steakhouse. Truffled mac and cheese and au gratin cheddar potatoes are not-to-be-missed sides. With only a handful of locations in California, this health-conscious concept doesn't skimp on flavor or prices, but quality and sustainability don't come cheap (the Malibu burger starts at $22), and for those seeking fresh options like a raw brussel sprout salad or their red-green-yellow tacos, it's well worth the price. Due to the high-volume location at the entrance of Seaport Village, expect to wait for a table, especially during busy brunch.

The line moves fast at Spill The Beans, a coffee shack designed like a nautical lighthouse on the east side of Seaport Village. Open from 7 am to 6 pm daily, you can get your java fix from their curated menu of coffeehouse classics, like Americanos and lattes, or specialty options like the cinna-bee latte with honey and cinnamon. Their bagel menu offers sweet and savory flavors as well as a rotating flavor of the month, with a unique variety of spreads like wasabi-ginger-soy and caramelized shallot and chive. 

With its bay views from Point Loma to the Coronado Bridge, this upscale seafood house is just right for a memorable evening. The romantic teak-paneled dining room and a deck that sits over the water are popular spots for visitor splurges and locals celebrating special occasions. Starters include jumbo lump crabmeat cake or a chilled seafood platter with a half Maine lobster, Dungeness crab, clams, prawns, and oysters, shared with sips of champagne. For mains, choose from mesquite-grilled Pacific coast swordfish or specialties like the Alaskan halibut, zesty cioppino, or prime rib eyes and filets from Double R Ranch.  Do not confuse this with the tourist-oriented Fish Market downstairs, which can offer an uneven dining experience.
