The Graham and Co.

$$ | 80 Rte. 214, Phoenicia, NY, 12464, USA Fodor's Choice
Recalling the summer camp atmosphere of the '50s and '60s and the heyday of the Catskills, the Graham and Co. has weekend bonfires, hammocks hanging under the trees, a volleyball net (often transformed into an outdoor movie screen), and simple but cool guest rooms decorated with vintage maps and fans, rough hewn wood, and industrial light fixtures. Float in an inner tube in the oval pool or grab one of the free bikes and head to the bustling main drag of the charming town of Phoenicia. There are no TVs in the rooms, just Tivoli radios and free Hi-Fi. Other listed amenities include "togetherness" and "camraderie." Explain that to the kids!

 • Fun blast from the past
 • Easy to socialize with other guests
 • Great place to unplug

Kate's Lazy Meadow Motel

$$$ | 5191 Rte. 28, Mount Tremper, NY, 12457, USA

The exterior of this single-story 1950s motel reveals little of what's inside the meticulously appointed suites, owned by Kate Pierson of the B-52s. The funky decor includes vintage pieces—Eames furniture, Russel Wright kitchenware—as well as custom wallpaper and handcrafted bathroom tiles and shower curtains. Most of the suites have a mint '50s kitchen and a sitting area with a gas fireplace; some suites have sleeping lofts and private decks. Lush gardens designed by Dean Riddle (a nationally known garden writer and green thumb) surround the red motel. A bonfire pit overlooks Esopus Creek, where you can fish for trout.

Pros

 • Fun and funky vibevery different property
 • Wide variety of accommodations

Cons

 • Still feels like a motel

Thompson House

$$ | 19 Rte. 296, Windham, NY, 12496, USA
Built around a farmhouse dating from the 1880s, Thompson House has become an expansive family resort with plenty of activities to keep families happily occupied and comfortable. There's a large heated pool, tennis court, miniature golf, bocce, shuffleboard, basketball, a playground—and that's just for starters. Grown-ups can take advantages of all this, of course, as well as the putting green and fitness center. Guest rooms are spread among six buildings; the standard rooms are not as charming as the suites, so it's worth paying a little extra if you care about four-poster beds and other nice details. Rates include breakfast and dinner.

Pros

 • Lots of activities
 • Wide variety of rooms
 • Near shops and restaurants

Cons

 • Attracts families, so there are a lot of kids
 • Some rooms lack a/c
 • Decor is sometimes dated
