21 Best Hotels in Austin, Texas

Background Illustration for Hotels

Almost all of the major hotel chains can be found in Austin downtown, and like most cities, they all vary in their quality of service and price. Perhaps the most historic hotel is the Driskill. More upscale hotels downtown include the Four Seasons, and W. As of this writing, plans for a Fairmont Austin are underway. Boutique hotels have surged in Austin as well. Among the most popular are the San Jose Hotel, Hotel Saint Cecilia, and Heywood.

There are plenty of properties citywide that average no more than 15 miles from city center. Almost all of them are conveniently located near shopping and restaurants.

If you're looking for quality pampering time, several resort spas are less than an hour away from town.

Festivals, conventions and university events can pack the city during the peak months, or during legislative sessions (held in odd-numbered years) so planning ahead is recommended. If you're staying downtown, the likelihood that you'll need a car is slim.

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

East Austin’s landmark, ARRIVE, is a masonry structure shaped as a giant piece of abstract art. The 2019 build has an industrial bohemian aesthetic and features 83 guest rooms, a Spanish restaurant, and a patio bar. The boutique hipster hotel fits in nicely on this trendy nightlife stretch of East Sixth Street. Guests can access some of the most sought-after bars and restaurants in town by foot, bike, or car. (Safe street parking can be scarce, however). The on-site Lefty's Brick Bar is a casual neighborhood bar and courtyard restaurant, and there's also a spacious rooftop patio. The staff is friendly and eager to help a younger-skewing clientele who don't mind the sparse amenities.

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

In The Proper's first foray outside California, Interior designer Kelly Wearstler spent years traveling Texas collecting vintage pieces for the Austin outpost. The result is a breath of West Coast cool with a hint of spice breezing through downtown’s Second Street corridor. The rooftop deck, lobby lounge, and patio restaurant have become fixtures to local somebodies.

Built in 1886 and impeccably restored, The Driskill represents a time when people mingled in grandiose settings and continues to epitomize old-world Texas luxury. Standard rooms are cramped, but corner rooms showcase nice city views. Reasonably priced suites provide spacious living areas and private balconies that are worth the splurge (try to reserve the LBJ Suite). Hotel Saint Cecilia

$$$$ | 112 Academy Dr., Austin, TX, 78704, USA Fodor's Choice

Saint Cecilia goes beyond anything you'd expect in an eclectic, decidedly Austin accommodation, from the art deco–style bar to the neon lights that read "S-O-U-L" shining above the heated outdoor pool. No two rooms are alike on the swanky, highly exclusive South Congress estate, from contemporary poolside bungalows to suites in the historic Victorian main building, though each reflects an extravagant, vintage-inspired style in a rock-and-roll meets turn-of-the-20th-century France motif. All have luxurious Hästens beds, refinished antiques, and unconventional artwork ranging from Keith Richards portraits to vintage Cuban movie posters. An on-site café has an all-day menu.

Pros

  • Intensely private, yet very central SoCo location
  • Luxuriously spacious rooms
  • Exclusive vibe with grounds closed to the general public and frequent celeb guests

Cons

  • Prohibitively priced
  • Fees charged for pets
  • Full property bookings and special events during festivals can limit availability

Hotel San José

$$ | 1316 S. Congress Ave., Austin, TX, 78704, USA Fodor's Choice

This hip, bungalow-style boutique hotel, located in the midst of South Congress Avenue, features a modern, minimalist style, adorned with balconies, patios, and tropical vegetation. The pool is small but picturesque, and the bamboo-shrouded courtyard lounge serves bar snacks, beer, wine, and popular cocktails, like their signature champassions (champagne and passionfruit juice with raspberries). Jo's Coffee occupies the same lot, and several first-rate eateries and shops are a short stroll away.
