With its hand-carved Alaskan cedar logs, burnished parquet floors, stone fireplaces, and glorious mountain views, this 1917 inn is a classic example of a national park lodge. German architect Hans Fraehnke designed the decorative woodwork. Rooms are cozy but the spacious lobby feels expansive and welcoming, and service is generally attentive. In addition to the full-service dining room, there's a small snack bar and a snug lounge.

In a forest setting a mile from the Nisqually entrance of Mt. Rainier National Park, Stormking features four luxury cabins for adults; all are shaped like yurts and have cozy gas fireplaces, hot tubs, private outdoor seating areas, and natural finishes of wood and stone. In summer, nightly activities include bonfires, barbecues, movie nights, wilderness bingo games, and even karaoke.

A large stone fireplace warms the common room, and wrought-iron lamps and antique bentwood headboards adorn the small bedrooms of this country inn, the only one of the park's two inns that's open year-round.
