The Best Hotel in Salvador, Salvador and the Bahia Coast

Background Illustration for Hotels

The Centro Histórico and the nearby neighborhood of Santo Antonio offer a good selection of places to stay, many of which combine a unique atmosphere with immediate access to the colonial charms of the Pelourinho. Heading south into the Vitória neighborhood along Avenida 7 de Setembro are a number of inexpensive establishments convenient to beaches and sights. In the fashionable Barra neighborhood, many hotels are within walking distance of the beach, while Rio Vermelho is the favored choice of most Brazilians and where the city’s best bars, restaurants, and nightclubs can be found, although it is a 20-minute taxi ride from downtown. High seasons are from December to March and the month of July. For Carnival, reservations must be made months in advance, and prices are substantially higher.

Catussaba Resort Hotel

$$ | Alameda da Praia, Salvador, 41600–460, Brazil

A longtime favorite among business travelers and families due to its close proximity to the airport and extensive facilities—including direct access onto the beautiful Itapuã Beach—this resort hotel could do with an overhaul. Lackluster decor aside, the hotel's tropical gardens remain well kept, the rooms are spacious and come with their own private terraces, and there is a large pool area for children. Make sure you opt for Catussaba Resort rather than its sister hotel, Catussaba Business, which is set a few blocks back from the beach.

Pros

  • Direct access to the beach
  • Ocean views
  • Plenty of amenities

Cons

  • Parts of the hotel are tired
  • Service can be patchy
  • Far from tourist attractions
