Monte Real Hotel Termas & Spa

$$ | Rua de Leiria, Leiria, 2425-039, Portugal Fodor's Choice

To get away from it all, head 15 km (10 miles) north of Leiria to this grand hotel by a thermal spa that was once frequented by medieval monarchs, from which you can make forays into its 60 acres of leafy grounds and the surrounding countryside. The 1920s building houses some very stylish suites, with plenty of amenities, but the rooms in the new wing are also large and plush, and all have balconies. Guests can use the large outdoor pool, but note that the modern spa, next to the old hot springs (which are currently out of bounds), is not included in the room rate, though various packages are available. The Paços da Rainha restaurant (€19) serves gourmet Mediterranean cuisine with an emphasis on local ingredients, while the Real Bar has snacks and drinks from late morning until after midnight.

Pros

  • Lots of activities, especially for families, with a kids club, mini-golf, and farm animals to feed
  • Free bikes, outdoors exercise circuit, and tennis courts
  • Excellent value in a sensitively restored historical building

Cons

  • Often hosts weddings and other big events
  • No gym, and spa costs extra
  • Occasionally overflown by planes from nearby air base

Casa da Nora

$ | Largo José Marques da Cruz 8, Cortes, 2410–506, Portugal

This former mill sits next to a small river with a darling little waterfall and waterwheel or nora whose peaceful splashing add to the charm of the house's location. A little path leads to a garden and an outdoor pool, which was revamped in 2025 and a Jacuzzi and paddling area added, all open year-round. The rooms have wood floors and modern decor; half of those on the top floor have a rooftop terrace with a view of the old farming village. The restaurant (€21) is justly renowned for its local and international cuisine and has a cellar with some 400 Portuguese wines, several of which may be ordered by the glass.

Pros

  • Delightful riverside location
  • Renowned restaurant
  • Family rooms have a microwave and fridge

Cons

  • No telephone in rooms
  • No elevator
  • Out of town
