As the largest hotel in the area, “Heaven” is the closest thing the Valle has to the big resort experience common in Riviera Maya, but without all the traffic or all-inclusive magnitude. In their place are 33, two-story villas (each with two or three rooms) framing two lakes that feed a 74-acre vineyard. Sophisticated rooms are enormous by Valle standards, with rich woods, slate floors, granite bathrooms, and decor in muted grays and beige. The most upscale hotel in Ensenada has a swanky "Mad Men" vibe, right down to the golden pillars, art deco terrace, and paintings of pin-up girls adorning the lobby and suites. Three restaurants pull out the stops, including Acueducto, which serves a sprawling Sunday brunch. Lucerna is the hotel to see and be seen, especially in the lobby where a tuxedoed pianist tickles the ivories at a blaring level, which is fine since the clientele seems to enjoy it while working their way from the bar to the pool deck. Dapper rooms are spacious and comfy with narrow balconies and soft white bedding. Request an ocean-facing room; although there’s no direct beach access, the views are spectacular. A spa, gym, pool, and business center are just a few of the creature comforts that will have you rethinking your checkout day.

Inside the luxury compound at Bruma, you’ll find a winery, the top-notch Fauna restaurant, villas, a market, and the architectural masterpiece, Casa 8; its eight suites are joined by a main house complete with a common living room, kitchen, pool, and sundeck. The star of the property is a 300-year-old oak tree where guests lose track of time while sipping on local blends. Pathways reminiscent of pier docks are lined with rosemary and lavender; they branch toward steel-and-glass rooms boasting polished concrete floors, stone walls, hand-painted tiles, and modern amenities. Big spenders can opt for the suite with its own pool and Jacuzzi. Included in the room rate are breakfast and use of mountain bikes. For a casual dining experience, pop into the neighboring wine garden for octopus pizza and light fare. It’s easier on the budget than the more formal Fauna.

With freestanding steel box-cabins perched on a boulder-strewn hill, this property has architect Jorge Gracia to thank for its innovative design. Dirt trails lead to 20 rooms (called “lofts”), each reminiscent of a shipping container from a distance, but inside you’ll find plush white bedding, concrete floors, rain-showerheads, and lamps made from steel pipes. Each sleeps a maximum of two guests, and the hotel is not child-friendly. In an effort to connect with nature, guests are given access to hiking trails and private decks with chimeneas that can be lit upon request. This also translates to no TVs, no phones (walkie-talkies provided), no room service, no minibars, no closets, no wine tasting, and very few room amenities. Despite these cutbacks, this still happens to be the one of the most expensive properties in wine country. Breakfast is served by the infinity pool bar, but your view begins in the glass lobby located at the foot of the mountain (it sometimes functions as restaurant, but is often closed and changes hands frequently). Beyond this point, only guests of the hotel can enter and rooms must be reached by shuttle or on foot. 

In addition to its own marina and artificial beach, this all-suites resort has indoor-outdoor pools, a spa, tennis courts, a water-sports center, and a sports bar overlooking the bay. The horseshoe-shape layout means that every room has a marina view, but corner suites on either end are by far superior. All guest quarters have refrigerators, coffeemakers, lounge areas, balconies, flat-screens, and either a king-size bed or two full beds. Even the most basic rooms are surprisingly large. Rates drop substantially midweek and between October and March. For those traveling to and from San Diego, the hotel has a shuttle service for $550 for a 10-passenger van. For a sampling of the hotel without the full bill, just $30 will grant you day access to the pools, sauna, and grounds.

Perched on a hilltop overlooking Vena Cava winery, this luxury inn is reminiscent of a Tuscan villa. Bright, romantic bedrooms are individually decorated with terra-cotta tile flooring and Mexican accents in the colorful rugs and pillows. Stone and tiled bathrooms were designed by owners Phil and Eileen, who have integrated green practices into their property, right down to their own line of organic bath products. Three of the rooms have full balconies separated by partitions, with chaise lounges and Mexican chimeneas. Stone stairs lead to a swimming pool and Jacuzzi.
